About Elizabeth Carmel Hamilton

Drawing is my immediate and honest response to emotions.  My art functions as a way to analyze, examine, and thereby, better understand the world around me.  Socially and personally, art occupies an important role in my perceptions about life and society.

My earlier and current works explore feelings of isolation from my culture of origin.  Throughout my body of work, I strive to communicate my often ineffable feelings into something I can see.  The content combines my perceptions of relationships that have shaped my personality, along with memories of definitive events.  Overall, I desire to communicate the evolution of those relationships – especially the one with myself.

I earned my BFA from the University of Wyoming in 2007 and  am currently a graduate student at the University of Florida pursuing a Ph.D. in art history.

My personal connection with my own work fosters my interest in the works of other artists.  Therefore, I remain involved in the study of art history.  My research encompasses self-portraiture by African American women in the late twentieth through twenty-first centuries.
